Renovation begins at the Hall-Dyer House!

The Tamworth History Center is pleased to announce that renovation began October 7 at the historic Hall-Dyer House in Tamworth Village. Ned Coville of Chinook Contracting, Moultonborough, is the contractor for this first phase of the project, which will secure the foundation, strengthen the frame, and initiate a thermal envelope. It’s THC’s goal to have part of the building ready for use during the celebration of Tamworth’s 250th anniversary in 2016.

When completed, The Tamworth History Center will draw on its over 8000 collection items, in conjunction with technology and participatory activities, to tell the stories of Tamworth and bring alive the town’s unique history. Meanwhile THC will also expand its collaborative programming in the community. To reflect this more contemporary and inclusive approach, The Tamworth Historical Society, founded in 1952, recently changed its name to The Tamworth History Center.

The Hall-Dyer House has significant historical value. A unique mix of Federal and Greek Revival styles, it qualifies for listing in both the NH Register of Historic Homes and the National Register of Historic Places. The renovation will follow the Secretary of the Interior’s Guidelines for Historic Buildings to preserve ‘character-defining’ features, while creating a flexible, ADA-compliant, technology-friendly and energy-efficient interior. The project will comprise three phases of work over three years. The total cost is estimated at $467,000.

THC is grateful for two grants of $10,000 each towards the project, from the Ham Foundation of North Conway and The Tamworth Foundation, and invites contributions from the community. The Tamworth History Center will provide a valuable new cultural and educational resource for Tamworth Village, the town and the region.
